Welcome to JAMAevidence

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) integrates the best available evidence with clinical experience that allows clinicians to recommend, and their patients to make, informed choices consistent with their values. JAMAevidence helps decision makers identify the best available evidence by providing guides to the systematic consideration of the validity, importance, and applicability of claims about the assessment of health problems and the outcomes of health care. Textbooks
Users' Guides to the Medical Literature: A Manual for Evidence-Based Clinical Practice, 2nd Edition
Now in its second edition, the Users' Guides is the centerpiece of EBM theory on JAMAevidence.

Quick Reference
Online diagnostic and treatment information, including quick-reference tables and nomograms, from the popular print edition pocket cards.

The Rational Clinical Examination: Evidence-Based Clinical Diagnosis
Available for the first time in a single compilation, The Rational Clinical Examination articles and updates turn EBM theory into practice via topically organized chapters.

Make the Diagnosis

These sections of The Rational Clinical Examination summarize current evidence for clinical evaluation of a topic; compiling the evidence to make a diagnosis; and applying the evidence.

Care at the Close of Life: Evidence and Experience
Part of the acclaimed JAMAevidence series, this groundbreaking resource offers expert guidance and carefully reviewed evidence on caring for patients at the end of life. It focuses on practical, real-world issues faced by primary care physicians and covers topics from communication issues to disease management to clinician self-care.

Self-Assessment
Includes a self-assessment quiz and review questions in each chapter to ensure mastery of key concepts.

You can purchase print copies of both textbooks at http://www.mcgraw-hillmedical.com/jama/.

Useful Tools

Education Guides
JAMAevidence offers a robust library of PowerPoint slide sets aimed at instruction and learning of EBM concepts. They are linked to related content and are available through search. Sample Education Guides from Users’ Guides to the Medical Literature (Online slideshow | PowerPoint download) , The Rational Clinical Examination (Online slideshow | PowerPoint download), and Care at the Close of Life: Evidence and Experience (Online Slideshow |  PowerPoint download) are available for free.
Glossary
Browse over 500 EBM terms and definitions from the global navigation button. Terms are linked to pop-up definitions inside book content and are also available via search.
Calculators
Calculators are functional, interactive tools designed to enhance the user's understanding of statistical and mathematical relationships in EBM. They are available via the global navigation button as well as through search.
Worksheets
Worksheets are interactive applications that provide users with a framework for studying EBM concepts. They are comprised of textual instructions as well as open, editable fields where learners can respond to instructions and prompts. For example, a worksheet may help the user organize notes on clinical literature in a particular patient case. Two types of worksheets are available on JAMAevidence: critical appraisal guides and information cycle problem-solving aids. They may be printed, edited, and saved to a user's personal profile. Users fill in a rich-text editing box with a formatting toolbar and spellcheck.
Critical Appraisal
Critical appraisal forms help users learn to evaluate research findings by considering validity, importance, and applicability of results. Notes entered into these worksheets by individually identified users are stored for later access and revision. Critical appraisal forms are available via their specific locations in the Users' Guides text, as well as on a user's My JAMAevidence page.
Information Cycle
Information cycle forms allow users to explore the "5 A's" of EBM practice: Assess the information, Ask specific questions, Acquire evidence, Appraise the data for validity, Apply evidence to patient care. Notes entered into these worksheets are stored for later access and revision. Information cycle forms are available via their specific locations in the Users' Guides text, as well as on a user's My JAMAevidence page.
Question Wizards
Question wizards formulate a well-built clinical question. Questions of therapy yield to the "PICO" format: Patient/Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome. These interactive tools are conditional algorithms with fields for user input. They allow the user to dynamically generate a question, clear fields, and update/re-generate a question when fields are edited. Users may save, email, and print the questions generated by the wizards.
