Why can't I find a chapter on a particular body part or system in The Rational Clinical Examination?
Typical introductory physical examination textbooks are organized from head to toe. These books teach the complete history and physical examination process and how to perform maneuvers. However, they do not provide detail about how well the maneuvers perform or how likely it is that the patient has the disease of interest. The Rational Clinical Examination is organized by condition, typically start with a clinical question, and quantify how good the findings are for detecting a condition. Thus, no matter what introductory text you choose to use, The Rational Clinical Examination should be a great companion resource.


The Rational Clinical Examination book contains the first 53 topics from the series that began appearing in JAMA in 1992 with complete updates. The JAMAevidence Web site launched with these articles, and additional topics and content will be added regularly, so the clinical coverage will continue to grow as long as clinicians continue to do clinical examinations.

Search Engine

Can I search with Boolean operators?
Yes, Boolean operators are supported by the JAMAevidence search engine. For example, if you type in heart AND head, you will first be given a choice of indexed terms to choose from. If you do not want to search any of those terms, you can select the Do a full-text search for 'heart AND head' link at the bottom of the results page. This yields results where heart AND head are considered.

What if I forget my user name and/or password?
You can retrieve your login information using our online Password Reminder. Or, call the Help Desk

We will ask for your name and address, and will access your account online. We will then email the user name for your account to the email address supplied upon registration. Since passwords are encrypted, we cannot determine your original password. We will change your password to a generic password, email that to your specified email address, and then you have the option to change your password.

When does my subscription start?
Your subscription starts as soon as your payment clears. For subscriptions ordered online with a credit card, this will be as soon as the credit card transaction is complete. For orders mailed or faxed to our Order Department, this will be when your payment is recorded; you will receive e-mail notification when the subscription begins.

How will I renew my subscription?
You will be contacted via e-mail before your subscription expires and you will be able to renew your subscription for another year. Renewals can be entered online or by mailing or faxing them to our Order Department.

How can I evaluate the site before I make a purchase decision?
JAMAevidence offers a simple Look Inside Free feature that allows you to examine the breadth of content and view select features.

How private is the information that I supply in my registration form?

Can I share my individual subscription with others?
No. Individual subscriptions are licensed only to the user who purchased the subscription. When you agreed to the Terms of Service Agreement, you agreed to keep your User Name and Password confidential.

How do I change information in my personal profile, for example, a new address or telephone number?

How can I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel your subscription up to 6 months after the start of your paid subscription. A cancellation is effective on the last day of the month in which it is received. Refunds will be prorated over the remaining term of the subscription starting with the month after the cancellation notice is given. For example, if you pay for your subscription on January 1 and cancel on May 7, the cancellation will be effective May 31, and you will be refunded for the period June 1 - December 31. I am a current subscriber to JAMA. Is a subscription to JAMAevidence included with my JAMA subscription?

Display/Browser Support

Why don't I see more of the page when I go to a chapter?
How much of the page you see depends on your monitor screen resolution. We recommend viewing at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 (for best results) or 800 x 600.

Which browsers and platforms are supported? Which are not supported?
JAMAevidence currently supports the following browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer (versions 7 and higher), Mozilla Firefox (versions 2 and higher), and Safari (versions 3 and higher), on the MS Windows (XP and Vista) and Apple Mac OS X operating systems.

Can I safely use pop-up blockers on the site?
No. Please disable all pop-up blockers. Some core content, including glossary definitions and figures, appears in pop-up windows.

How do I customize my home page?
The JAMAevidence home page allows you to configure the layout to suit your needs. Rearrange boxes by clicking and dragging the colored bar at the top of each. Click the +/- control to collapse and expand the boxes. If you are logged into your Personal Profile, we will remember your preferences.

Why don't table gridlines appear when I print a table?
You can change your browser settings to accommodate table gridlines. In Internet Explorer, select Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Printing > Check the box Print background colors and images. In Firefox, select File > Page Setup > Format & Options > Check the box Print Background (colors & images).
